The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) has once again urged Romanian authorities to introduce a nationwide self-exclusion system for gamblers. The appeal was made by EGBA Secretary General Maarten Haijer during an interview with Antena 3, one of Romania’s leading television channels.
According to Haijer, a national self-exclusion register is one of the most effective responsible gambling measures available. Similar systems are already in operation across 17 European Union member states, helping to strengthen player protection.
The issue was also discussed during an event held at the Romanian Parliament and organized by the Romanian online gambling association. During the meeting, EGBA presented a set of recommendations aimed at creating a modern and effective self-exclusion framework in line with European best practices.

The association recommends that the system:
- cover all licensed gambling operators, including both land-based and online providers;
- be available through a user-friendly government website that complies with GDPR requirements;
- be clearly integrated into gambling platforms and easily accessible to players;
- operate in real time with a reliable, fail-safe mechanism;
- establish clear minimum and maximum self-exclusion periods;
- provide registered users with information about available support services;
- require operators to remove self-excluded players from all marketing and promotional communications.
EGBA believes that implementing such a framework would significantly strengthen consumer protection and represent an important step toward a safer and more responsible gambling market in Romania.
