European roulette is a classic version of this gambling game that originated in the eighteenth century and has remained virtually unchanged to this day. Being an entertainment of European aristocrats, European roulette is extremely popular at Monte Carlo casinos and other gambling capitals in Europe.

It is interesting that in the United States, where the gambling industry is notable for its high turnover, roulette in general and European one in particular is not especially popular, so this game of chance can really be rightfully considered as a purely European entertainment.

History of European Roulette

Pascal, the French scientist, who came to the concept of a roulette wheel in the seventeenth century can be considered as the "grandfather" of European roulette. Although, the great scientist hardly ranked himself to the gambling inventors, and not in vain, as the commercial application of the roulette wheel was found much later, in the eighteenth century already.

herefore, after that the development of European roulette proceeded at the most rapid pace; the game instantly became popular with the European aristocracy, then it was just as quickly banned in many European countries (including, for example, Germany and the United Kingdom), until it has finally gained the official status of a king of casino games. The wheel used to play European roulette remained unchanged from the eighteenth century, although initially it did not have an additional zero sector, but only the cells numbered from 1 to 36. The introduction of an additional zero sector immediately increased the casino’s advantage to a very substantial 2.7%.

Description of European Roulette

It is actually extremely simple to learn how to play European roulette: it is necessary to get acquainted with the possible variety of bets offered to a player in this gambling (and their number exceeds ten different options). In total, all bets in this game can be divided into two main categories, the so-called internal and external bets. The player can bet both on one number and on a large quantity of numbers (for example, a bet on small/large quantity covers eighteen numbers at once). It stands to reason, that depending on the quantity of numbers covered by the bet, the chance of winning and payout for winning may vary. By this means, for example, making a bet on a single number, a player in case of winning receives a payment from a ratio of 35 to 1, and traditional bets on red/black or even/odd are paid from a ratio of 1 to 1.

European roulette involves the following types of bets:

  • Bet on red/black (payout 1 to 1): the player bets on the ball stopping on one of red or black sectors. When betting on red, winning sectors are the following: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, 16, 18, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 30, 32, 34 and 36. When betting on black, winning sectors are as follows: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15, 17, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 29, 31, 33 and 35.
  • Bet on odd/even (payout 1 to 1): the player bets on the ball stopping on a cell with even or odd number. If the bet is made on even, sectors with numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34 and 36 are considered to be winning. When betting on odd, winning sectors are with the following numbers: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33 and 35.
  • Bet on big/small (payout 1 to 1): the player bets on the roulette ball stopping on a cell with a number from 1 to 18 or with a number from 19 to 36. If the bet is made on a small number, then the winning sectors are under numbers from 1 to 18. If the bet is made on a large number, then sectors with numbers from 19 to 36 are considered to be winning.
  • Bet on a dozen: the player bets on the roulette ball stopping on a cell with a number from 1 to 12 (the first dozen), with a number from 13 to 24 (the second dozen) or with a number from 25 to 36 (the third dozen). Payout size varies as follows: winning bet on the 1st or the 2nd dozen is paid from a ratio of 2 to 1, and a bet on the 3rd dozen is paid from a ratio of 1 to 1.
  • Bet on a column: in fact, the player bets on the ball stopping on one of the cells that make up the first, second or third column (in any case, payment is made from a ratio of 2 to 1). The winning numbers in case of betting on the first column are as follows: 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31 and 34. If the player bets on the second column, sectors with numbers 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, 29, 32 and 35 are considered to be winning; and winning numbers when betting on the third column are the following: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33 and 36.
  • Bet on six numbers (payout 5 to 1): the player bets on any six sectors in two adjacent rows. For example, it can be the following numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 or 28, 29, 30, 31, 32 and 33.
  • Bet on four numbers (payout 8 to 1): the so-called corner bet, or cross bet. The player can bet on any four sectors that border each other, for example, 1, 2, 4 and 5 or 17, 18, 20 and 21.
  • Bet on three numbers (payout 11 to 1): the same as a bet on six numbers, but a player bets on three neighbouring sectors (for example, 1, 2 and 3 or 4, 5 and 6).
  • Bet on two adjacent numbers (payout 17 to 1).
  • Bet on one number (payout 35 to 1).

European Roulette Rules

For all its seemingly confusing and complex betting system, the European roulette is perhaps the simplest and most liberal of all existing gambling. In a strict sense, there are no rules in European roulette, since the player, by and large, does not have the opportunity to make any decision after he makes a bet.

However, in some European casinos the player can meet two rules that significantly facilitate the player’s difficult task to beat the dealer, that is, the casino. In general, these rules are peculiar to the French roulette, but in casinos with European roulette game, it is also possible to meet two these rules.

The first rule with a quite unusual name (the prison rule: if a player bets on a chance (for example, odd/even, red/black or big/small), and the ball stops in the zero sector, the player’s bet does not burn, but is saved on the gaming table. In the next round, the winning bet in this way is returned to the player, and the winning is not paid out. Thus, the prison rule in European roulette is a kind of opportunity to play one round as if on loan. For the player, playing European roulette with such a rule is very beneficial, since this rule reduces the advantage of the casino, which is already small, to a modest 1.35%.

The second rule that can be found when playing European roulette is the so-called rule of change, La Partage in the original. According to this rule, when betting on a chance, a player loses 50% of his bet if the ball, slowing down, eventually stops at the zero sector.
